The Way back Inc. is helping men faced with varying degrees of substance use disorders (SUD). Any man that has a SUD and desires assistance in addressing the negative impacts associated with substance abuse may request admission; no restrictions are placed on race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or ethnic identification. The applicant must be willing to abide by the rules of the house, meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5) criteria for a substance use disorder, and meet American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)* criteria for a 3.1 or 3.5 residential level of care.
Additionally, applicants for withdrawal management must also abide by the rules of the house, meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5) criteria for a substance use disorder, and meet American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)* criteria for a 3.2 level of care.
The primary purpose of The Way Back, Inc. is to provide participants with the means to develop an individualized program for attaining and maintaining sobriety, as well as support efforts to reduce the negative impacts of substance abuse. We use ASAM criteria for assessment, DSM-5 for diagnostic purposes, and to determine medical necessity. We offer evidence-based interventions and groups, in addition to a socially supportive environment.
The Way Back adheres to an abstinent-based method of rehabilitation from substance use, however, if a client lapses while in treatment he will be reassessed using the ASAM criteria, and if appropriate will be able to continue their treatment. Individuals who lapse will be assigned to our relapse policy and procedure; or if appropriate, may be referred to a higher level of care.
The Way Back is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation licensed and certified by the State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs. The Way Back Inc. is under contract with San Diego County Behavioral Health Services and is funded by the County of San Diego and Medi-Cal. The Way Back Inc. and the county of San Diego are participants in the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System (DMC ODS).
Clients are assessed during their treatment and discharge is based on the assessments. The program does not have a set number of days for treatment but is based on progress assessed using the ASAM criteria.
Often, individuals who suffer from substance use disorder have, for many years, participated in self-defeating behavior. Breaking that cycle and promoting change doesn’t happen overnight, so The Way Back offers a comprehensive assessment and reassessment process, to accurately monitor your treatment, and your length of stay.
A typical day at The Way Back consists of spiritual wellness walks and meditation, education and clinical groups, free time for job search, employment or volunteer work, and personal time. Each participant is assigned a SUD counselor, certified peer support, and case manager. Working together, they will assist with all facets of the treatment process.
In addition, clients will have an individual counseling session weekly to assess progress on treatment plan goals. Client and Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts (LPHA) collaboratively create a list of areas of concern to address while in treatment to ensure that the process remains client centered. Counselor supports and guides client through his treatment and recovery journey. Counselor utilizes evidence-based practices to assist the client in learning skills to begin focusing on his maladaptive behaviors.
Clients must adhere to established rules and regulations and participate in daily upkeep of the home. This fosters a therapeutic environment that promotes personal respect, responsibility, and ultimately, long-term recovery. Each client is responsible for his own progress in treatment, and this progress is at their own pace, which is why The Way Back provides flexibility in the duration of a clients stay and their daily schedule.
The Way Back is dedicated to treating substance use disorders at various levels of care as outlined in the ASAM guidelines. This includes the clinical management of moderate physiologic withdrawal syndromes associated with habit-forming substances in residential facilities offering 24-hour support to facilitate successful detoxification. In addition to low-intensity (3.1) and high-intensity (3.5) residential services, The Way Back will provide Withdrawal Management (3.2) level services when medically necessary, as determined by the Medical Director or a Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts (LPHA). There is an increasing body of evidence to support the practice of patients receiving successful detoxification services in residential facilities offering 24-hour support. Please reference our withdrawal management (WM) policies and procedures in this document to see how The Way Back ensures proper selection of participants for 3.2 services via screening and assessment, the process for clinical monitoring, how transfers to lower and higher levels of care are facilitated, and finally, how referrals are made for Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT).
